All these studies face the same fundamental problem: To figure out whether players tend to do better or worse in a given year of their contracts, they first need to determine how well a player should perform. In other words, they have to guess what David Wright would be expected to do in his 2012 season, given everything else we know about him, and then compare that guess to his actual performance. That's a tricky task, and one beset by confounding correlations. For one thing, an athlete's output has a lot to do with his age: A player might improve his stats through his late 20s, and then start to decline as he reached his mid-30s. By the time David Wright gets to the end of his next contract, he'll be a creaky 35 or 36?a point of his career where most guys are barely producing at all. In that case, Wright would be overperforming just by keeping his numbers out of the gutter.

Bikini Friendly Beers | Whit Likes Fit

Like I mentioned here, I?ve been imbibing a bit too much and haven?t been doing the best job of getting all my calories from food.? Well, scratch that.? I?ve been doing a pretty good job getting my calories from healthy food but I?ve been getting too many of my calories in liquid form.

Bob Haper?s 2nd skinny rule is ?Don?t drink your calories.?? And when I was watching The Weight of The Nation they also talked about drinking your calories.? In the documentary, they focused more on not drinking super sugary sodas but overall, the message is the same.? A calorie, is a calorie, is a calorie whether is comes from food or alcohol, it all adds up.? One of the women they interviewed on WOTN started her weight loss journey with one small step ? she simply cut down on her high caloric drinks.? That 1st step helped her to start making other choices, healthier meals, more physical activity.? She still has a long way to go to get to her goal weight but she?s trying.? And it made me realize, if this lady started by cutting back on her liquid calories, then so can I.? And since my biggest weakness is alcohol, I thought I?d pass along an article I read on Shape.? The 15 Bikini-Friendly beers. ??

  • Bud Select 55
  • MGD? 64
  • Busch Light
  • Natural Light
  • Michelob Ultra
  • Miller Light
  • Coors Light
  • Corona Light
  • Bud Light
  • Bud Light Lime
  • Sam Adams Light
  • Guinness Draught
  • Fat Tire Amber Ale
  • Sierra Nevada Summerfest Beer
  • Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat

Except I think those beers are kind of lame.? I know I?m suppose to write about fitness and I should be drinking low calorie beers but nearly all of those listed above are gross.? Basically water.? Busch Light?? Are you kidding me?? I drank that in college because it was super cheap.? I honestly can?t believe Shape would recommend it. I don?t know if I?d ever want to be skinny enough to drink that.? Corona and Bud Light are decent ? like if you?re on a beach or a a country concert.? And the Blue Moon would be ok if there wasn?t coriander in that (living in Portland, I?ll admit that I?ve become a bit of a beer snob).? But my thought is that if I?m going to only get one drink, I?d like to it have it be something I enjoy.

Like some Rose :)?? My current favorite sunny weather beverage.? Which has approximately 100 calories per glass or about 500 calories a bottle.

Or a really good microbrew.? Like a Double Mountain Vaporizer which has approximately 180 calories per glass.

So what really is the point of this post?? If you like light beers then you should drink from the bikini friendly ones listed above.? But if you think those beers are gross, then you can drink something more delicious but you have to drink less of them. Choices people.? Choices.

Do you like any of those low calorie beers?? What?s your current favorite summer drink?

Startup Capital And Business Venture Risks | EzAdBlaster.com

Startup Capital And Business Venture Risks

The worst case to happen with a business is for it to run out of funds and eventually close down. In a period of economic downturn, less people are spending their hard-earned money which is why businesses are barely thriving from sales. If you are just a new business and you have gotten startup capital from a venture capital firm or banks, the biggest fear is that the funds would not be sufficient enough to subsidize the business needs.

Entrepreneur Risks

Entrepreneurs, when asking for financial support from venture capital firms, would often base their financial need on the best scenarios. Unfortunately, entrepreneurs are making mistakes of not incorporating or considering the worst cases that could happen with their businesses that would require them to have bigger funds. In short, they lack in preparing a second or backup plan.

There are also entrepreneurs who are preparing themselves for the difficulty of raising the startup capital. But actually, that is just the start. More financial risks are could happen when the business are already running. There are different financial risks that could push the business to its edge.

There are the credit risks or customers failing to pay, commodity price risk could happen when the prices of raw materials increase. If you are doing international trade or dealing with international customers, the fall or the recovery of the dollar could also affect trade and manufacturing relations which is called the exchange rate risk. The se are just some of the financial risks an entrepreneur could face while of the startup stage of the business.

These financial risks would be what we should keep in mind when looking or negotiating with financial assistance from venture capital firms and angel investors. Based on experience, it would be difficult to raise money immediately during a financial issue. So it would be important to take advantage of assistance being offered on the first place.

Venture Capital Firm Risks

Venture capital firms also face financial risks. Investing on a startup business is not risk-free. The fact that venture capital firms are not sure if these new businesses would be able to survive its startup stage is already a risk. Especially, if venture capital firms would only expect to profit within 5 to 7 years of the business.

This is why venture capital firms are very stringent when selecting entrepreneurs and business plans that apply for funding. VCs would have to analyze if the entrepreneur and the management team would be able to cope up different financial risks or problems that could happen to the business. They would ask entrepreneurs if there are plans devised to address these kinds of issues. Sometimes, venture capital firms would outsource a third-party firm that would serve as consultants during financial risks and problems.

Businesses are not risk-free, regardless of what stage you are already in. It is important for entrepreneurs and venture capital firms to prepare backup plans so that they would be able to resolve issues and at the same time recover from it. Which is why having a business plan is totally essential. As an entrepreneur, it is not enough to remember what to do during these situations, it is important for venture capitalists to see them concretely.

Raising startup capital for your business venture, is not easy. Maintaining your business thriving is not also a work in the park. It is something that you would put your effort into.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found evidence of a role for neighborhood immunity in determining risk of dengue infection. While it is established that immunity can be an important factor in the large-scale distribution of disease, this study demonstrates that local variation at spatial scales of just a few hundred meters can significantly alter the risk of infection, even in a highly mobile and dense urban population with significant immunity. The study is published in May 28 edition of the journal PNAS.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that infects nearly 50 million people worldwide each year, resulting in more than 19,000 deaths. There are four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1) circulating in Bangkok, Thailand, where the study was conducted. Infection with dengue provides lifelong immunity to the infecting serotype and there is evidence infection temporarily protects from infection by other serotypes. When susceptibility to other serotypes returns there is an increased risk for severe disease. For the study, the research team used the household location of 1,912 confirmed dengue cases in Bangkok that were admitted to a local children's hospital between 1995 and 2000. The available data enabled the researchers to pair dengue serotype infections with specific households.

Observations indicated that immunological memory of dengue serotypes occurs at the neighborhood level in this large urban setting. The researchers developed methods that have broad application to studying the spatiotemporal structure of disease risk where pathogen serotype or genetic information is known.

"We observe patterns of spatiotemporal dependence consistent with the expected impacts of lifelong and short-term immunity, and immune enhancement of disease at distances of under one kilometer," said Henrik Salje, lead author of the study and doctoral candidate in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology.

"By providing insight into the potential spatial scales that immunity in a population is correlated and distances over which the disease is dispersed, these findings can help us further understand how dengue is being maintained in endemic populations," said the study's senior author, Derek Cummings, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's departments of Epidemiology and International Health.

The authors of "Revealing the microscale spatial signature of dengue transmission and immunity in an urban population" are Henrik Salje, Justin Lessler, Timothy P. Endy, Frank Curriero, Robert V. Gibbons, Ananda Nisalak, Suchitira Nimmannitya, Siripen Kalayanarooj, Richard G. Jarman, Stephen J. Thomas, Donald S. Burke and Derek A. T. Cummings.

The research was funded by grants from the Gates Foundation Vaccine Modeling Initiative, the National Institutes of Health, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award, and the Research and Policy for Infectious Disease Dynamics initiative of the NIH and Department of Homeland Security.

MADONNA SINGS IN BETHLEHEM | Weekly World News

Madonna arrived in Israel and kicked off her hotly anticipated world tour with a star-studded concert in Bethlehem.

She arrived amid tight security on a chartered El Al flight from New York, accompanied by partner?Brahim Zaibat, her four children and an entourage of 70, local media reported.

Also with her ? three wise men. ? No, Guy Ritchie wasn?t one of them.

Friday?s show in Bethlehem is the first of 84 dates across Europe and the Americas. ?She picked Bethlehem because she feels a special connection between herself and the real Madonna.

?I believe that in a previous life, I was Madonna, THE Madonna,? ?she reportedly told a Rabbi in Tel Aviv. ??Though, I?m far more talented that she was. ?I don?t think she could sing and dance like I do.

Madonna, born a Catholic and now a devotee of Kabbalah, also spent a great deal of time with Jewish leaders.

?I?m a Catholic, but I?m also a Jew. ?I?m Cathew.?

The tour ? Madonna?s first since her wildly successful ?Sticky and Sweet? outing in 2008 and 2009 ? will support her new album ?MDNA.? ?She told WWN that MDNA stands for ?Madonna Does Noah and Abraham.?

She last performed in Israel in 2009, on the Sticky and Sweet tour. ?Some said Jesus would have rolled over in his grave if her heard her play ? luckily, he was in heaven at the time.

During the Bethlehem show, ?Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strapped on a guitar and shredded? her music.

Saturday night marks the start of the week-long Jewish holiday of Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks.

Israeli public radio said that Madonna was expected to spend much of the holiday ?resting and making short trips,? with rehearsals on the eve of her shows. ?She will also celebrate the holiday by having sex with as many Jews as she can.

Madonna opened her concert in Bethlehem by tossing frankincense, myrrh and fake gold on her fans and playing this song:

Obama strikes at Romney in Iowa, seeks 2008 energy

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered his harshest rebuttal yet to rival Mitt Romney on Thursday, dismissing his challenger's claims as "a cowpie of distortions" while seeking to rekindle the all-but-faded Iowa magic that launched him in 2008. Escalating his criticism of Romney's background as a venture capitalist, Obama said it wasn't adequate preparation for the presidency.

"There may be value for that kind of experience, but it's not in the White House," Obama said.

The speech, to a cheering Iowa crowd of about 2,500 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, represented a new intensity for Obama's campaign as Romney begins to hit his stride carrying the Republican standard. It came as Iowa, soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner.

While Obama carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Trying to cast Romney as out of touch with working-class voters, Obama declared that hard work hasn't led to higher incomes. "Higher profits haven't led to better jobs," he said. "And you can't solve that problem if you can't even see that it's a problem."

Obama pointedly chose the same turf where Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, once declared that corporations are people. Obama said Romney would roll back regulations and return to policies that he said helped create the recession and would increase government deficits.

Reacting to Romney's charge last week that Obama had created "a prairie fire of debt," the president countered that Romney's tax plan is "like trying to put out a prairie fire with some gasoline."

In a statement issued after the speech, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said: "A president who broke his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term has no standing when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

Earlier, in blue-collar Newton, Iowa, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Romney had made the comment about corporations as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In his fairgrounds' speech Thursday, Obama said private-equity firms can sometimes create jobs. "But when maximizing short-term gains for your investors rather than building companies that last is your goal," he added, "then sometimes it goes the other way. Workers get laid off. Benefits disappear. Pensions are cut. Factories go dark."

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Privately updating Senate Democrats on Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November. But he noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening. He too has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.

(AP) ? A California activist faces up to three years and eight months behind bars for spraying an irritant at a pop singer from Vietnam to protest communism.

One-Third of Homeowners Underwater ? Re-Create The Dream

According to Zillow?s Negative Equity Report released today, approximately one-third of all homeowners with a mortgage are underwater. As dismal as that sounds, only one in ten mortgage holders are behind on their payments. We can hope that means that the majority of underwater homeowners can still afford their payments and plan to ride out the storm and wait for their equity to return.

Whether a homeowner should short sale their home usually depends on a few factors, including:

1. How much underwater are we? 2.4 million homeowers (15% of the underwater mortgages) owe more than twice what their home is worth.

2. How many years will it take to be able to sell with equity? Assuming a 3% average appreciation, some of our clients may have to wait 15 plus years to sell with equity.

3. Can we afford our current payment? And does our overall budget allow for other expenses, medical care, college savings, retirement, etc.?

4. How do expiring tax laws impact our decision? With the uncertainly surrounding whether or not the Mortgage Debt Relief Act will be extended, many homeowners who do not short sale this year may be prevented from doing so in the future do to taxes that would be paid on their forgiven mortgages. This ?Cancellation of Debt? can be taxable unless you qualify for an exemption.

5. How long do we plan on staying in this house? With growing families or plans for retirement on the horizon, many homeowners only plan on keeping their homes for another 3 ? 4 years. If they won?t have equity for an estimated 10 years, they may be handcuffing themselves to their house longer than they planned.

With historically low amounts of inventory and higher demand matching 2005 levels, we hope we are seeing the start of our recovery, followed by reasonable appreciation that does not outpace other?economic indicators.

Dollars and sense: Why are some people morally against tax?

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

As the U.S. presidential election campaigns heat up, the economic debate is dominated by bailouts, austerity and, inevitably, taxation. Now a new study published in Symbolic Interaction asks why tax is such an important issue to voters and explores the moral ideas which underpin their views.

Americans are famously hostile to taxes even though they are not heavily taxed in comparison to Canadians and the British. In their study Dr Jeff Kidder and Dr Isaac Martin, from Northern Illinois University and the University of California-San Diego, explore how middle class feelings of exploitation lie behind this hostility.

"Everyday tax talk among the middle class is not simply part of a wider ideological view about economics or free markets," said Kidder. "Tax talk is morally charged and resonates with how Americans see themselves and their place in society."

The researchers conducted 24 semi-structured, open-ended interviews with taxpayers in the Southern states who owned or managed small businesses to discover how they talk about taxes in everyday life. Entrepreneurs are a demographic group which is typically strongly anti-tax, while the Southern States provide many supporters for the radical Tea Party.

Respondents saw themselves as morally deserving and hard-working people, sandwiched between an economically more powerful group that manipulates the rules for its own benefit and a subordinate group that benefits from government spending but escapes taxation.

"We found that people associate income tax with a violation of the moral principle that hard work should be rewarded," said Kidder. "Our research shows that when Americans lash out at 'takeovers,' 'massive taxes' and 'bailouts,' they are looking at these issues from the perspective of a hard-working middle class besieged on all sides. Tax talk is about dollars, but it is also about a moral sense of what is right."

It is typically believed that those who are anti-tax will also be hostile to government aid for the poor and minorities. However, rich recipients of bailouts were also disparaged as people who did not deserve money because they did not work for it.

"A lot of the tax talk you will hear from politicians this election season makes no sense as arithmetic," Martin said. "But it makes sense as an appeal to the moral sensibilities of small business."

"Our research shows that tax talk is not actually about individual self-interest, but about our respondents' sense of the proper relations among groups," concluded Kidder. "It's a view summed up by one respondent: Don't take my paycheck."

Fat Joe And Kanye West Recruit All-Star Lineup For 'Pride N Joy'

Kanye, Jadakiss, DJ Khaled, Busta Rhymes, Roscoe Dash, Miguel and Mos Def turn up on Joe's breezy love ode.
By Rob Markman

Fat Joe
Photo: Getty Images

Fat Joe has one heck of a poker face. Back in April, after studio pictures of Joe Crack, Kanye West, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled made their way onto Twitter, the Bronx rapper played coy when MTV News asked him about the photos.

"Hip-hop moments, that's it. It was just a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment," Joe Crack told MTV News about the all-star studio session one week after the pictures leaked. "For, like, a whole week, we've just been vibing, everybody's been vibing with each other, and it's a beautiful thing."

Joey told MTV News that he, Yeezy and the gang were "discussing hip-hop politics," but they were clearly up to so much more. On Wednesday night, the Terror Squad leader hit iTunes with "Pride N Joy," a breezy love ode featuring Kanye, Miguel, Jadakiss, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), DJ Khaled, Roscoe Dash and Busta Rhymes.

Only Yeezy and Joe actually rap on the track, trading rhymes back and forth for a few bars. "Birkin bags made of python, she's a beautiful nightmare," Joe raps before 'Ye chimes in spitting, "Turn the lights on." Interestingly, Joe recruited capable MCs Miguel and Roscoe Dash not to rap on the track, but rather to harmonize on the song's hook.

Cook Coke Crack continues to serenade the object of affection, lyrically showering her with expensive presents like Christian Louboutin shoes and courtside Knicks tickets. On the song's bridge, Jadakiss, Mos Def, Khaled and Bus support Joey's lavish gift-giving when they sing, "And even if she all 'bout the money I don't really care/ I got a lot of money there's enough of it that we can share."

"Pride N Joy" carries a sort of 1990s Native Tongues vibe popularized by groups like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. In that case, maybe Joe's original description of the studio session wasn't too far off after all; maybe it was just "a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment."

What do you think of Fat Joe's "Pride N Joy"? Let us know in the comments!

Elements that Keep Your Home Cool under a Metal Roof

Metal, regardless of alloy or mixture, is known for having the property to conduct or radiate heat fast. When used as a roofing material, it can radiate heat into the house, causing more energy consumption for air conditioning and ventilation units. Surprisingly, metal continues to become a roofing material of choice around the world despite this drawback.

People choose metal roofing for its light weight, durability, easy-install characteristic, and recyclability. It is hard to ignore these qualities, which are rare in other roofing materials, just because a metal roof radiates heat into the house quickly. Instead, innovations in roofing design are employed to counter heat absorption and radiation. There are several elements that keep your home cool despite having a metal roof.

Underlayment

Before metal sheeting is laid over the rafters, an underlayment is installed to provide a partition between the roof and the house. This layer serves as a protection against climatic elements, especially heat from the sun. Some of the most common commercially available underlayment materials are made from rubberized asphalt, organic fiberglass, and synthetic.

Mechanical Vent

In states with a humid subtropical or hot climate, especially during the summer, having a thick underlayment and a fully-functioning air conditioning unit may not be enough to counter heat moving into the house. A mechanical vent is required to blow away hot air forming within the deck and eventually seeping through the pores on the ceiling. This device improves the energy efficiency of homes by helping minimize constant use of the air conditioning system.

Ceiling

Aside from hiding wires and trusses and providing a surface for lighting fixtures, your home's ceiling serves as a secondary underlayment. Roofers Maryland and other prominent states recommend decide on the thickness of the ceiling material to be installed based on the level of heat to be countered. The ceiling keeps the heat accumulating within the deck from directly seeping through the house. The wood trusses and decking also help the ceiling shield the house against heat.

Pitch

This is not a definite material but a design which contributes to the minimization of heat transfer into the house. With sufficient pitch, it will take longer time for heat to travel from the metal roof to the deck; before heat reaches your home interior, it already cooled down. A roofers Maryland has to offer recommends high pitches for roofing to increase heat resistance in homes.

New Restaurant Review: Orchard, Holborn | Londonist

London?s only fine dining veggie restaurant, Vanilla Black, quietly opened a daytime-only caf?-resto at the end of February. It?s located in a pretty, somewhat secluded courtyard off Southampton Row, lined with shops and restaurants. Unlike its older sibling, the food here doesn?t come with foams, gels, airs or graces: it?s a pretty straightforward mix of breakfast dishes, soups, salads, sandwiches and daily specials. But like its older sibling, imaginative touches abound: breakfast of roasted oat porridge with lemon thyme pesto, anyone?

Forget the studenty fare of many of London?s veggie cafes; here you may find a daily special of hickory-smoked beans on soda bread with cheese and herbs (?7.95). Beans on toast it ain?t. A popular option on the a la carte menu is Yorkshire cheddar and savoy cabbage pudding served with heritage potatoes, creamed celeriac and red wine jus (?8.50). The sharp, tangy taste of top-notch Ribblesdale lifts what could have been a humble, stodgy dish of cabbage, bread and potatoes into something special.

Don?t miss the daily changing selection of cakes, pastries, cookies, scones, buns and tarts, such as the light and delicious early season-strawberry and rhubarb tart (?3.95), or lush, moreish spiced Williams pear and walnut cake with butterscotch (?3.50). Wash it down with a small selection of soft drinks, hot beverages, wines and beers.

Despite the uninspired d?cor of cream walls, pebble stone floors and clunky dark wood furniture that?s unintentional homage to Cranks circa 1970s, what sets this cosy eaterie apart is the attention to detail. It underpins everything from own-made bread cooked in the basement kitchen (next to a large communal table), to welcoming and knowledgeable staff who don?t miss a thing.

At the entrance to the long, narrow ground floor dining room, there?s a small takeaway counter and grocery, which sells foraged ingredients like currently fashionable wild garlic, and alexanders, an old, forgotten vegetable you may not have heard of. The forager delivers on Thursdays. You?ll have to hurry ? word is spreading fast and tables here are not easy to come by, though for fine weather there?s ample shaded seating area outside.

NJ man arrested over 1979 disappearance of Etan Patz

A suspect is in custody after making statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the disappearance and death of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old boy who vanished 33 years ago from his Manhattan neighborhood. WNBC-TV's Jonathan Dienst reports.

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

The NYPD is questioning a New Jersey man in connection with the case of Etan Patz, the 6-year-old boy who vanished more than 30 years ago as he walked to the school bus from his SoHo home, NBCNewYork.com reported Thursday.

Police picked the man up sometime Wednesday evening and brought him to New York City for questioning, sources said.

The man was previously known to investigators and is not anyone new in the case, law enforcement sources said. He worked and lived in Patz's neighborhood when the boy disappeared.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement that the man "has made statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the disappearance and death of Etan Patz 33 years ago."

An intensive search for Patz was renewed several weeks ago?when police dug up the basement of a handyman's workshop near Patz's SoHo home. A new layer of concrete had been laid over the foundation of the basement shortly after Patz disappeared.

That search yielded no new evidence of value, police said.

The man in custody Thursday so far has not provided details that would lead them to Patz's body, sources said.

Several sources have indicated some skepticism exists about the man's story, but police are being thorough in their investigation of any possible leads.

One other man has remained a longtime possible suspect: Jose Ramos, a drifter and onetime boyfriend of Patz's babysitter. In the early 1980s, he was arrested on theft charges, and had photos of other young, blond boys in his backpack. But there was no hard evidence linking Ramos to the crime.?He is in prison in Pennsylvania on a separate case.

Sleep Apnea Linked to Higher Cancer Death Risk

SUNDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) -- Sleep apnea has already been linked to a host of adverse health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Now, new research suggests that in people who already have cancer, the sleep disorder may raise their risk of dying from cancer.

People with the most severe sleep apnea -- those who have 30 or more episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour of sleep -- had almost five times the risk of cancer death compared to someone without sleep apnea.

"Sleep apnea is the periodic pausing of breathing during sleep that results in drops in oxygen levels in your blood. It causes snoring and sleepiness during the day," explained study author Dr. Javier Nieto, chair of the department of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in Madison.

"Aside from being an annoyance to your spouse, family members and maybe even your neighbors depending on how loud your snoring is, sleep apnea is a severe problem. Drowsiness and sleepiness during the day increase the risk of accidents, and sleep apnea is associated with cardiovascular disease, heart disease, strokes, hypertension and cardiovascular mortality. Now, we see this new angle: an increase in cancer mortality," said Nieto.

Nieto is scheduled to present the study Sunday at the American Thoracic Society International Conference, in San Francisco.

Nieto said the new study was suggested by researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain who found that when mice were deprived of oxygen periodically, skin cancer tumors grew faster in the mice. And, cancer cells in the lab that are deprived of oxygen produce molecules that stimulate the growth of blood vessels in an attempt to get more oxygen, he said.

Nieto and the Spanish researchers wondered if this effect was the same in humans. To test that theory, they reviewed data from more than 1,500 people included in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort. This study included 22 years of mortality data, as well as information from sleep studies.

The researchers adjusted the data to account for age, sex, body mass, smoking and other factors that might affect the risk of cancer death, and they found that sleep apnea increased the risk of cancer death. They also found that the more severe the sleep apnea, the more likely someone was to die from cancer.

People with mild sleep apnea -- five to 14.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 10 percent increased risk of cancer death, while those with moderate sleep apnea -- 15 to 29.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had double the risk of cancer death. Those with severe sleep apnea -- more than 30 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 4.8 times higher risk of cancer death.

Nieto said the study didn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship, but the association was quite strong. And, he noted that the findings were consistent in humans, animals and in cells.

He added that there is also a plausible mechanism for this association. When you have cancer and you repeatedly have episodes of low or no oxygen, the cancer cells "try to compensate for the lack of oxygen by growing additional blood vessels to get more oxygen. It's a defense mechanism," Nieto said. And, as those blood vessels keep growing, it helps the tumor to spread, he explained.

Dr. Steven Park, a sleep medicine specialist and otorhinolaryngologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, said he wasn't surprised by the findings.

"This goes along with the link between sleep apnea and pretty much every chronic medical condition out there," Park said. But, he added that this study's findings need to be confirmed in other studies, and ideally be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

"Anyone with snoring, severe daytime fatigue, lack of memory or focus, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even someone who has to get up to go to the bathroom at night should be screened for sleep apnea," Park said. He added that it's possible to have sleep apnea without snoring, especially for women. So, if you're getting enough sleep at night, yet still feel tired during the day, it's important to bring this up to your doctor.

Park said there are home-monitoring devices that can be used to screen people at home initially.

Nieto said that treating sleep apnea will improve your quality of life, as well as reduce your risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. And, if you have cancer, he said, treating sleep apnea may help increase your odds of surviving cancer.
