I just made a charitable donation to a for-profit business.? A cheese-maker, to be exact.? This is not something one does every day, and not something I thought I ever would do. This calls for some rethinking about ?profit? and food producers.
My donation was for $50 on kickstarter, to Caromont Farm in rural Esmont, Virginia.? I happen to know quite a bit about Caromont Farm because I am doing research on ?New American Farmers? and that?s what they are.? In fact they are one of the most interesting operations in what is something of a renaissance area for alternative food production.? This is just over the Blue Ridge from Polyface farm, which has gotten famous due partly to ?Pollanation?, but Polyface is only one of dozens of inventive operations in central Virginia that are redefining quality in food production.
These operations vary in a lot of ways, but they share an ideological commitment to creating a sustainable alternative to our industrial food production system ? and to staying afloat while doing so.? One thing that keeps them up at night is the problem of growth ? not growing plants and animals, but growing their businesses. How do we grow?? How big do we grow?? Should we grow?
Caromont was started 6 years ago by Gail Hobbs-Page with 13 goats.? She developed a roster of highly inventive, world-class cheeses.? Powered by word of mouth, the operation began to grow: up to 50 goats of her own and regular purchases from other local producers (both goat and cow).? ?Her cheese is now sold not only at farmers markets, but at several dozen restaurants, including Richmond, Atlanta, and DC, and now in Murray?s Cheese Shop in Greenwich Village.? But although her cheese is popping up in distant places, this is a classic slow money operation, supporting two milk providers, two goat milk providers, several grass hay and alfalfa hay growers, giving free whey to local livestock farmers, and running a huge tab for feed and supplies with the locally-owned hardware store.
Gail and Caromont have now reached a point where they do need to grow, specifically with a new cheese-making vat which costs (drum roll?) $35,000.? For a small farm like this, which gets no government subsidy like big commodity producers, and which couldn?t get a bank loan if their life depended on it, it may as well be 35 million.
Hence, kiskstarter.? But who would donate money to a for-profit business?
Well, me, after some thought.? We might start by reworking our concepts of for-profit and non-profit.? Gail could be making more money as a chef, which is what she was doing at a high-end Charlottesville restaurant from 1994-2004.? There she earned a reputation as a local food advocate before anyone had heard the word locavore.? She could be making even more running a CSA program for Dave Matthews (whose farm is part of the local food renaissance), which is what she did before deciding to start Caromont Farm.? Yes, Caromont is ?for profit,? but they don?t make much profit, and it is clearly driven more by ideals about food production than profit.? ?Meanwhile my employer, Washington University, is a ?non-profit institution? but it?s also an enthusiastic player in the university-industrial complex and a leader in academic capitalism.? But Washington University doesn?t pay taxes, and donations to it are deductible; Caromont pays taxes and donations to it are not deductible.? Conclusion: just because the IRS divides businesses into profit and non-profit doesn?t mean I have to.
But here?s the larger issue.? Our corrupt, subsidized, cost-externalizing, environment-degrading, animal-torturing, overproducing agricultural system is never going to be fixed on capitol hill or in the statehouses.? It simply has too much money and political power.? The only way forward is a widespread, economically sustainable, alternative food system, centered on low-external input, ecological sustainablility, slow-money farms.? Surprisingly, such a system is growing rapidly, and you support it every time you buy food from one of its producers.
You can also support it by conventional charitable contributions; there are some non-profits out there doing good work to promote this sort of solution (Union of Concerned Scientists and Keep Antibiotics Working and two of my favorites).? You can give them money any time and they will take it gladly (and pester you in perpetuity with requests for more).
But this is different.? This is a key area in the food & farming renaissance, this is one of its rising stars, and it is at a crossroads.? So here I am, making a donation to a for-profit business, and feeling better about it than about most donations I have made to non-profits.

In an effort to resolve some of its financial woes, Kodak is preparing to place 1,100 of its patents on the auction block. This hearty library of intellectual properties is attracting a who?s who of technology heavyweights.
An unnamed source has told?The Wall Street Journal?that Microsoft, Apple and patent collection firm Intellectual Ventures Management are joining forces to form a bidding group. While Google, Samsung, HTC, LG and patent aggregation firm RPX are said to be working together to form a similar strategy according to?The Wall Street Journal?s sources.
Intellectual Ventures has a history of working with companies to acquire patent catalogs, which seems like business as usual. However, it would appear that longtime rivals Microsoft and Apple are teaming up to take on a common enemy in Google and their Android operating sytem.
In addition to these major players, The Wall Street Journal states that other companies could get involved in the auction sometime next week.
The most appealing patents in Kodak?s auction are ones related to capturing and processing images on smartphones, cameras and tablets.
The bulk purchase of patents is often viewed as a strategic move. Case in point, when Google acquired Motorola Mobility, it was largely speculated this purchase was mainly to bolster Android?s patent portfolio in any legal battles against competing platforms.
Patents not only protect a company?s assets, they also have the potential to be used as leverage when dealing with legal issues. There have been cases where companies have settled out of court in exchange for the ability to license each other?s patents.

See, that?s the problem, right there in a nutshell. What she does is the opposite of what you?d do, what anyone in their right mind would do, especially if scantily clad. The writing flies in the face of all logic. Even Stone Cold Steve Austin would make Olympic time hightailing it out of there because it?s doubtful that who or whatever made that noise is someone nice with your best interests at heart. At this point the willing suspension of disbelief is shattered in anyone over the age of, say, 14 ? the very people for whom you?d be forgiven for thinking horror films are actually made. And once that suspension is shattered, it?s nigh-on impossible to build it back up again.
Many ?fantastic? genre films (horror and its cousins fantasy and science fiction) fail to suspend viewers? disbelief at crucial junctures because of a propensity to formulaic plotting and over-familiar tropes. They habitually display cavalier attitudes to situational credibility and motivational integrity. Horror screenwriting almost by definition issues a licence to play fast and loose with the rules of logic, but this has led to a basic disregard for those rules and, by extension, for viewers. Audiences appreciate careful crafting of a solid three-dimensional universe, populated with believable characters whose actions are driven by their personalities and traits, much more than crude plot necessity to deliver scantily clad Girl A into the bloodstained bludgeoning hands of the Butcher in the Basement.
Fantasy and SF hold an advantage over horror; because they are made for younger audiences they are more easily forgiven for operating on plot logic that poses no problems for the average 14 year-old.

If it goes bangity-bang in space; if it throbs and screams and breaks out of its shell with slimy malevolence; if it seeks to enslave your body, your mind, your gonads or your planet; if it looks cuddly and beeps a lot, it?s ?sci-fi?. We pronounce that: skiffy. And if you love fantasy, you?ll love skiffy. And skiffy is to science fiction as Attila was to good table manners.? Skiffy is what happens when you remove the science and allow the fantastic free rein.
Most 14 year-olds will forgive bad science, muddled reasoning, absurd plot developments, ridiculous decisions and 5% solutions as long as things explode loudly, ugly creatures slice each other up in dank caves and scantily clad girls-women look great and scream loudly as they meet their unmaker. Horror audiences should, in theory, reject such clumsy, unsubtle machinations, yet they keep coming back for more despite films digging wider and deeper logic graves from which their characters have no chance of escape. In horror narratives the dangers to protagonists from butchers, monsters and psychos can be chickenfeed compared to those posed by clunky, cringe-worthy plotting.

Comcast doubles broadband speeds 'in certain markets,' launches 305Mbps Xfinity Platinum service
Comcast has just done the deed -- following a rumor on the matter, it's launching 305Mbps (down) / 65Mbps (up) Xfinity Platinum internet service in the highly populated Northeast division of the United States. For those who've been around a while, you may remember a time where one would weep upon finding out that Verizon's FiOS simply wasn't available at a desired location. Now, however, Comcast is doing its darnedest to rival fiber-to-the-home options with blisteringly fast cable service.
In addition to its new flagship tier, the provider is also doubling the speeds of two of its existing internet speed tiers in certain markets at no additional cost. Specifically, Xfinity Blast! customers will now get download speeds of up to 50Mbps (formerly 25 Mbps), and Extreme 50 customers will now receive speeds of up to 105Mbps (formerly 50 Mbps). According to GigaOM, the ultra-desirable Platinum service will ring up at $300 per month, which is a full $90 more than Verizon's own 300Mbps FiOS option. Of course, this probably means that you'll hit your monthly cap a heck of a lot faster, but hey -- at least you'll get bragging rights.

Katherine Jackson, the mother of Michael Jackson and guardian of his three children, is safe and with a family member in Arizona, authorities said late Sunday, one day after another relative reported her missing.
The disclosure came after her granddaughter, Paris Jackson, said in a Twitter message that Katherine was missing. Another concerned family member, believed to be Katherine's nephew Trent Jackson, officially reported her missing Saturday night amid a dispute over the estate of her superstar son. Reports say Trent is looking after Michael Jackson's three children in Katherine's absence.
Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy Mark Pope said investigators made contact with Jackson, but he did not have specifics on her whereabouts. The agency previously said they believed she was with a relative and safe, but wanted to speak with her.
Paris Jackson, the 14-year-old daughter of the late pop star, tweeted early Sunday that her grandmother was missing.
"I haven't spoken with her in a week I want her home now," she posted from her Twitter account. She also tweeted a number for people to contact in case they saw the 82-year-old matriarch of the famous singing clan.
The family drama unfolded days after it was revealed that some of Katherine Jackson's children had written a letter to the executors of Michael Jackson's estate, alleging his will, which left his fortune to his children, his mother and charity, was a fake.
The undated letter, signed by Janet, Randy, Tito, Rebbie and Jermaine Jackson, claimed Katherine Jackson was being manipulated by the executors, John Branca and John McClain, her health had been affected, and she had suffered a mini-stroke.
