Clippers beat Jazz 116-114 for 16th straight win

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Chris Paul could hardly be heard over Jay-Z's pounding music as his Los Angeles Clippers teammates sang along in the visitors' locker room.

And why not?

The Clippers had just pulled off a 19-point comeback for their 16th straight victory ? in a venue where they had often struggled.

Paul did most of the damage, leading the Clippers (24-6) with 29 points, including the final seven, as Los Angeles squeaked out a 116-114 win Friday night over the Utah Jazz.

The Clippers' winning streak is the longest in the NBA since Boston won 19 games in a row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 23, 2008.

The last time the franchise won three straight in Salt Lake City was 1979-81 when they were the San Diego Clippers.

"This one is a great win for us because we kind of needed a challenge," said Blake Griffin, who added 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers. "(We had) to prove not only to everybody else but to ourselves that we can still win close games like this and win a game down 19 in the third quarter."

In the opposing locker room, the Jazz were lamenting another one that got away ? the second loss at home to the Clippers during their franchise-record streak. Utah dropped the first by one on Dec. 3 after leading by 14.

On Friday, ex-Clipper Randy Foye put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was contested by Matt Barnes, but no foul was called. Foye finished with a season-high 28 points for Utah.

Foye did his best not to say anything about the officiating.

"I felt as though I pump-faked," Foye said. "He knew that I wanted to shoot the 3 and I felt the contact. He made me go straight up and shoot the ball straight down. It was just a tough play."

Paul was tough down the stretch, hitting the clinching free throws after getting fouled by Al Jefferson with 3.4 seconds left.

"When (DeAndre Jordan) came to give me the ball screen, I wasn't worried about (Gordon) Hayward, I was just worried about Al Jefferson," Paul said. "I could tell (Jefferson) was going to try and blitz me. Anytime two guys try and trap me, I'm always going to attack the slower guy. If they wouldn't have called the foul, I was right around Al anyway."

Paul sank both free throws this time, after missing one with 18 seconds left that allowed Jefferson to grab the rebound, draw a foul and sink two free throws at the other end to tie it at 114.

Paul made sure he hit both the next time.

"Man, I couldn't wait to get to the line. I couldn't wait to get to the line," Paul said. "I was mad at myself for missing that last one. I couldn't wait to get to the line to redeem myself."

Just like the first game this season against the Clippers, Utah had the upper hand early.

The Jazz used a 36-point second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 58-48 halftime lead. Utah reserves did most of the damage.

Alec Burks and Earl Watson pushed the pace, big men Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors provided a presence inside and Hayward found ways to score.

Kanter's block of Ronny Turiaf ignited the crowd.

Hayward's 3-pointer tied it at 34 with 7:04 left in the second and he scored 10 straight for the Jazz, who forced eight turnovers in the quarter and held the Clippers to 37.5 percent shooting.

Foye, who kept Utah close in the first with a 13-point quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 54-41, with two more free throws.

The Jazz led 74-55 with 8:08 left in the third on a pair of free throws by Paul Millsap. But the Clippers outscored Utah 29-14 the rest of the quarter to pull to 88-84 going into the fourth.

Paul provided the offense in the third with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

"At the beginning of the third quarter, they made another run at us but then we got a little bit of a rhythm and then started guarding. We started getting some stops and getting out in the open court," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said.

"Give Utah credit but our guys battled back tonight. They found a way to win and that's what it's all about. We stayed together, we weathered the storm when we had to and gave ourselves a chance and we were fortunate to make enough plays."

The loss dropped Utah below .500 at 15-16. The Jazz have lost six of their last eight.

Jefferson added 22 points for Utah. Hayward had 17 off the bench.

The Clippers had six players in double figures. DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

"It's all tough," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "On our home court, we had a lead, we gave up the lead but we continued to fight. We made some mistakes but fought our way through it and had a chance to win the ballgame at the end. Unfortunately they got a lot of free throws."

The teams combined for 81 free throw attempts, with Utah making 37 of 40 and the Clippers 33 of 41.

Points in the paint were identical and rebounds were close (36-35 Jazz), but the Clippers had a four-point edge on second-chance points.

That was enough.

NOTES: An unidentified Jazz employee was disciplined and had his access to the team Twitter account discontinued after what team officials deemed an inappropriate tweet regarding the firing of Nets coach Avery Johnson and Brooklyn's interest in Phil Jackson. The tweet said Jackson only wants "great players," an apparent reference to ex-Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who had criticized Johnson's offense. ... Jazz point guard Mo Williams still has swelling in his sprained right thumb and remains out indefinitely. ... The Clippers got a scare late in the first quarter when Lamar Odom came up limping. He returned in the second and finished with 12 points. ... The Clippers failed to register a blocked shot despite coming into the game averaging 6.52.

Elvis, Beatles top list of most-forged autographs

Reuters

Singer Elvis Presley is pictured in an undated, autographed publicity photograph.

By Eric Kelsey, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Elvis Presley and The Beatles top the list of most-forged celebrity signatures in 2012, with less than half of their autographs for sale certified as genuine, memorabilia authenticators PSA/DNA said on Thursday.

The King and The Fab Four British rockers, who topped the list two years ago when it was last released, joined notable figures such as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and late pop star Michael Jackson on the list of most-forged celebrity signatures.

Late American astronaut Neil Armstrong landed at No. 3 on the list, after fake Armstrong signatures rose significantly after his death in July.

One reason forgeries of Armstrong's autograph soared was that he rarely signed for fans during his life, Joe Orlando, president of Newport Beach-based PSA/DNA, told Reuters.

"Armstrong is someone who is very conscious of the value of his own autograph," Orlando said. "Even before he passed away he was very tough to get ... It really heightens the level of his market."

Secretaries and assistants responding to huge volumes of fan mail are one reason for fake signatures floating through the marketplace, said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles.

"Back in the day, the kids would write to the movie studios," Barrett said.

"There was absolutely no financial gain 50 years ago and secretaries and assistants just wanted to make them happy. A lot of times people stumble upon an old box of signed photographs in grandma's attic and don't know they're forged."

Barrett, whose specialty is late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe's autographs, said that official documents such as contracts and checks are reliable sources to verify whether or not a signature is forged.

"A good rule of thumb is to compare it to a signed contract," she said. "Sometimes (celebrities) would have secretaries or others sign photos and letters but they couldn't have a contract signed by a proxy."

Iran begins naval maneuvers near Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state TV is reporting the country's navy has begun maneuvers in the area of the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil passes.

It says the maneuvers began early Friday, involving warships, submarines jet fighters and hovercrafts.

The drills come as the West increases its pressure over Iran's nuclear program. The West suspects it may be aimed at producing nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

Iran has threatened to close the straits over Western sanctions but has not repeated the threats lately.

The report says Iran warned ships to stay away from the site until Jan. 3. The maneuvers cover nearly 1 million sq. kilometers (400,000 sq. miles) from the Strait of Hormuz to northern part of Indian Ocean, including the Sea of Oman.

HSBC Sued By Atlanta-Area Counties Over Predatory Lending Claims

ATLANTA -- Three Atlanta-area counties have filed a lawsuit claiming that British bank HSBC cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in extra expenses and damage to their tax bases by aggressively signing minorities to housing loans that were likely to fail.

The Georgia counties' failure or success with the relatively novel strategy could help determine whether other local governments try to hold big banks accountable for losses in tax revenue based on what they claim are discriminatory or predatory lending practices. Similar lawsuits resulted in settlements this year worth millions of dollars for communities in Maryland and Tennessee.

Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb counties say in their lawsuit, which was filed in October, that the housing foreclosure crisis was the "foreseeable and inevitable result" of big banks, such as HSBC and its American subsidiaries, aggressively pushing irresponsible loans or loans that were destined to fail. The counties say that crisis has caused them tremendous damage.

"It's not only the personal damage that was done to people in our communities," said DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader. "That has a ripple effect on our tax digest and the demand for public services in these areas."

The city of Atlanta straddles Fulton and DeKalb counties, while Cobb County is northwest of the city.

The lawsuit says the banks violated the Fair Housing Act, which provides protections against housing or renting policies or practices, including lending, that discriminate on the basis race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status or handicap.

The counties say their tax digests ? which represent the value of all property subject to tax ? have declined from a high point in 2009. Fulton's tax digest has dropped about 12 percent, from $32.7 billion to $28.7 billion; DeKalb's has dropped about 20 percent, from $22 billion to $17.5 billion; and Cobb's has dropped about 15 percent, from $25.5 billion to $21.3 billion, the lawsuit says. That reduces their ability to provide critical services in their communities, the lawsuit says.

In addition to reducing tax income, vacant or abandoned homes that are in or near foreclosure create additional costs for the counties, the lawsuit says. Their housing code and legal departments have to investigate and respond to code violations, including having to board up, tear down or repair unsafe homes. They have to deal with public health concerns, such as pest infestations, ruptured water pipes, accumulated garbage and unkempt yards. And fire and police departments have to respond to health and safety threats.

The lawsuit says predatory lending practices include: targeting vulnerable borrowers for mortgage loans with unfavorable terms; directing credit-worthy borrowers to more costly loans; putting unreasonable terms, excessive fees or pre-payment penalties into mortgage loans; basing loan values on inflated or fraudulent appraisals; and refinancing a loan without benefit to the borrower.

The counties are asking the court to order the bank to stop its behavior and to take steps to prevent similar predatory lending in the future. They are also seeking financial compensation for the damages they've suffered and punitive damages to punish the bank for its "willful, wanton and reckless conduct." The counties say the financial injury they've suffered is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Andrew Sandler, a lawyer for HSBC and its subsidiaries, said he couldn't comment on the case. A federal judge has given the bank until Jan. 25 to respond to the counties' complaint.

Lawyers for the counties declined interviews on the case, but one of them, Jeffrey Harris, said in an emailed statement that they are continuing to investigate other banks and could file additional complaints.

Similar suits were filed against Wells Fargo by the city of Memphis and surrounding Shelby County in Tennessee in 2009 and by the city of Baltimore in 2008. Those suits were settled earlier this year. Both settlements included $3 million to the local governments for economic development or housing programs and $4.5 million in down payment assistance to homeowners, as well as a lending goal of $425 million for residents over the subsequent five years, according to media accounts.

As in those cases, the lawsuit filed by the Georgia counties says the bank, in this case HSBC, targeted communities with high percentages of Fair Housing Act-protected minority residents, particularly blacks and Hispanics.

"Communities with high concentrations of such potential borrowers, and the potential borrowers themselves, were targeted because of the traditional lack of access to competitive credit choices in these communities and the resulting willingness of FHA protected minority borrowers to accept credit on uncompetitive rates," the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit says minority borrowers were disproportionately targeted with high-cost loans between 2004 and 2007.

Before the beginning of the subprime lending boom in 2003, annual foreclosure rates in metro Atlanta averaged below 1 percent, but U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development data show that the estimated foreclosure rates for each of the three counties now average more than 9 percent and are as high as 18 percent in the communities with the highest percentages of minority borrowers, the lawsuit says.

It is the alleged targeting of minority communities that entitles the counties to seek action against HSBC for loss of tax income and other expenses, the lawsuit says.

"If you can show that you yourself have suffered harm by an illegal act under the Fair Housing Act, even if you are not the target, even if you are not the intended victim, you can still sue to stop the behavior and to recover any damages that you can prove you suffered because of the violation of the Fair Housing Act," said Steve Dane, a lawyer whose firm was involved in the Memphis and Baltimore lawsuits.

The costs incurred by counties because of high rates of foreclosure are reflected in court records and related fees for each home, and police and fire departments can calculate the costs of responding to a given address, Dane said. He said it takes a lot of time and effort to gather the necessary records to prove the harm.

Another discouraging factor could be a lack of political will, said Lisa Rice, vice president of the National Fair Housing Alliance.

"Politicians may not want to go up against the banks," she said, adding that there will likely be other local governments that give this a try but she doubts the number will be high.

But Jaime Dodge, an assistant law professor at the University of Georgia, says she thinks more cases are likely, at least in the short term as municipal governments continue to feel the squeeze of a tight economy and seek ways to refill their coffers. They may try to test federal courts in different parts of the country, she said. Successes in multiple jurisdictions could lead to more attempts, but if courts start knocking the suits down that would likely discourage them, she said.

I'm the Young Chick In Aqua Aerobics | xoJane

?You know, you really need to get actual exercise. Walking from the living room to the kitchen does not count.??

I?ve had that exact conversation twice: Once with my grandmother, who was getting noticeably weaker and developing a habit of falling down in her driveway. And once with myself, a couple of months ago, while I was eating a sandwich and watching Parks and Rec. It wasn?t a proud moment.

I don?t know about you, but I have kicks where I really, really want to exercise, and then periods where all I want to do is loaf with my cat. Except on Wednesdays, when I suit up and join the dozen or so moms and grandmoms at my gym for a little something I like to call aqua aerobics.

image

Doing my best Esther Williams for Lands End.

Yes, in our ragtag crew, I am one of just a few young women who get wet to get their heart rate up, and not the other way around.

I came to the class after a long summer away from exercise. I had sprained my ankle in a bootcamp aerobics class, where -- at 6:30am, twice a week -- I huffed and puffed my chunky butt alongside legit athletes in triathlon and marathon commemorative t-shirts. I have rarely known embarrassment as immediate and awful as being the fat girl crying in gym class AGAIN. So I figured water aerobics, with its images of cutesy grannies in skirted suits and floral swimcaps, might be more my speed.

What I didn?t realize is that aqua fitness is not joking around. This business will whip you into shape, leaving you exhausted after to sleep the slumber of tiny babies snuggled in a cozy papoose of strength and cardio training. First of all, the class is taught by one of my favorite people ever -- Bill Junius, a huge bald dude who always wears a black polo and white sneakers while demonstrating the moves on the deck. He has the class running, jumping, pushing buoys?in the water, all while yelling, ?STRONG! POWERFUL! MIGHTY! WARRIORS!? at us. Have you ever tried to lift yourself out of the pool continuously for 60 seconds? I simultaneously do and don?t recommend it. Your arms will be noodles by the end.

Every time a newbie shows up to the class, they are skeptical, like I was. ?Do you really get a workout here?? they ask dubiously. Check them out 20 minutes later, and they?re hanging on the deck, panting, because it?s frickin? HARD to do mountain climbers on the side of the pool for minutes on end. It is HARD to do underwater triceps kicks with more than a foot of foam resisting you.?

Turns out, the exercises we?ve been telling our grandparents to do so they don?t keel over? They?re actually awesome for people of all ages and abilities. The American Heart Association recommends?that everyone gets at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week -- that goes for kids, your great-grandpa in a wheelchair, everybody.?

And if, like me, you?re the lady who grabs a wall spot in yoga class because you?d rather tip into something than someone, a workout with a little give is actually smarter, says Bill, genius trainer and wearer of Santa hats during class. ?It?s good for everybody because water is very forgiving. It?s comforting. But water resistance is exercise. You have the choice to increase the intensity. It isn?t a social class -- it?s a workout.?

image

?Oh, why, George, from this angle you can barely tell my minimizer suit makes my tits smaller than my belly!?

I?m not the only young person who thinks so. There are a couple of other young women in my class -- some bigger, some smaller, one with the best eyebrows I?ve ever seen on a human being (not exercise related, but props where props are due!). And it?s not just in the pool. My friend Meghan stayed on dry land and did senior yoga to recover from a traumatic injury when she was just a youngin?. Not only did it help her get some movement and balance back, but it improved her memory, as well. The fact that some of her more mature classmates fell asleep in savasana was just a cute bonus.?

So why does gentler exercise seem like lesser exercise, when it all helps you live longer? Do people think it just takes less effort? Because I can tell you: I can run a mile, be done in 10 minutes and be crying at the end, swearing to redevote my life to bread. Or I can spend an hour in my suit (can I recommend Lands End athletic swimsuits to the chesty and/or round among us? Because mine is better than any sports bra I?ve ever had), work up a sweat and be ready to hit the gym again tomorrow. Because sometimes exercise needs to be fun. Sometimes you need a little camaraderie. And sometimes you?ve got to respect your elders, and recognize they know a good workout when they see one.

Lindsey is on Twitter, contemplating joining an aqua Zumba class next: @lindseywoho.

Tips On How You Can Avoid Filing Bankruptcy - Finance

Deciding to file for personal bankruptcy is a major life decision, and should not be jumped into lightly. Read the suggestions below to learn what you should expect, and the steps you will need to take as you think through this decision. You need to gain as much knowledge as you can prior to going through this ordeal.

Seek a less serious option prior to filing for bankruptcy. You could find relief from small debts by using a consumer credit counselor. You should also try negotiating a payment plan with your creditors; make sure you get a written agreement of the new payment plans.

Once you have filed for bankruptcy, scrutinize new credit offers. A lot of lenders offer credit cards and loans directed at people who have just come out of a bankruptcy. Unfortunately, many times these offers have high interest rates. They could place you back on the place where you started. That is why it is important to make use of good financial discipline.

No matter what?s going on, make sure you tell the truth about your situation. One of the worst things you can do is lie about your debts and assets. Not only will it affect your filing, it is illegal. If you fail to declare certain assets or debts, you may be held criminally liable for the omission if it was found to be intentional.

Always pay any bills you incur on time, and don?t pay only the minimum amount due. Making the minimum payments will lower your credit score and paying your debts back will take a very long time.

If possible obtain a personal recommendation for a bankruptcy lawyer instead of randomly choosing one. There are lawyers out there who will take advantage of your financial state and not deal honestly with you. Make sure your filing process goes as well as possible by finding a trustworthy lawyer.

Make your decision wisely when you select a bankruptcy attorney. This kind of law is popular among inexperienced lawyers. It is important that the attorney you pick is experienced and has the proper licenses. Use the Internet to look at lawyer?s disciplinary records, background, and client ratings.

Don?t file bankruptcy if you can afford to pay your debts. Although bankruptcy may feel like a simple method of getting out of your large debt, it leaves a permanent mark on your credit history for up to 10 years.

You should never lie when filing for bankruptcy. Hiding assets can cause immediate dismissal. If it has a bearing on your case, then all assets and income must be declared. This will show to the court that you are sincere in wanting to resolve your issues and this will help you along the way.

There are ways to file for personal bankruptcy without abandoning all responsibility for your debts. You can pay off a portion of your debts after restructuring them by filing under Chapter 13. Most people resist filing bankruptcy because they consider the inability to pay their debts as being irresponsible. The solution to getting relief from a mound of debt that is impossible to repay without feeling like you have completely cheated your debtors can be filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

While you are thinking about filing bankruptcy, consider how you ended up in your current financial straits. While unexpected medical bills can?t always be evaded, unrestrained splurging during shopping trips can certainly be avoided. You may need more help that a bankruptcy lawyer can provide if you are constantly spending money that you don?t have.

Make sure to list all of the debts you are responsible for when you retain a lawyer to handle your bankruptcy case. While this means you have to disclose information about credit card companies, hospitals and lenders, it also means you should tell him about any money that you owe family and friends.

Bankruptcy is not a chance happening in anyone?s life. When you file for bankruptcy, things must be done the right way. If you follow the advice given here, you?ll be able to make sure you have everything in order for when you file bankruptcy.

Blue widgets is actually a more complicated topic than it first appears to be. This piece has hopefully been a good foundation, but it pays to continue learning. Keep looking for more great information, and use it to your advantage.

Ronaldo still hearts Man. U

Real Madrid wiz Cristiano Ronaldo says he enjoyed his six years around Old Trafford, the time spent as a Manchester United man under Sir Alex Ferguson.

So he will honor the soccer tradition of not celebrating should he score against his old club in the coming Champions League Round of 16.

Real Madrid and Manchester United is the top matchup in the Round of 16 draw conducted Thursday in Switzerland, dripping with subplots. There?s also the old Jose Mourinho vs. Ferguson rivalry, plus the fact that one of these Euro heavies will fail to find the Champions League quarterfinals.

What Ronaldo told the Spanish newspaper AS:

I won?t celebrate if I score against United. I still speak with Ferguson. I miss him a lot, and I miss Manchester United. I felt very good there, it was like a family.

?I had six great years there and am still friends with my teammates. It is thanks to Manchester United that I am here playing for Real Madrid. Without them, I wouldn?t be the player I am today.?

They did share some good times together, didn?t they? Ronaldo cut ties with Old Trafford in 2009, making the big move to Real Madrid.

While at Manchester United, Ronaldo and the Red Devils claimed three Premier League titles and one Champions League crown.

Scottish Salmon Producer to Farm Mulloway in Africa - Scotland ...

High-end Scottish salmon farming company Loch Duart is in the process of setting up a dusky kob farm in Mozambique, Loch Duart?s managing director and co-founder Nick Joy told Undercurrent News.

Date:

Fri, 21 Dec 2012

Source:

Undercurrent News

The company hopes that the farm would be producing significant tonnage of dusky kob, also known as mulloway, within two years.

?I certainly think the project should be producing a significant amount of tonnage within two years from now, depending on what you call significant,? said Joy. ?I think a few hundred tons within the next couple of years would be pretty good going.?

Joy described the project as extraordinarily exciting, and in particular cited the chance to further the company?s work with people and the environment as motivating factors.

?Dusky kob are on the red list in South Africa, its been very heavily overfished. So we can do something useful in returning that,? he said.

Can birds make us happy?

Dec. 17, 2012 ? As millions of us post our Christmas cards -- many of which star a robin red breast -- ecologists are investigating whether birds make us happy. Speaking at this week's British Ecological Society Annual Meeting, researchers will reveal how they are investigating the links between birds and our well-being, and explain how their results -- due out next year -- could have a major impact on UK bird conservation.

There has been an increasing amount of research on the health benefits of green spaces such as parks and nature reserves, but we know far less about how the wildlife within these habitats contributes towards well-being benefits.

Take wild birds for example says PhD student Natalie Clark from the University of Reading, who is leading the study: "Most of us say we enjoy seeing wild birds in our local environments every day, be that the friendly robin visiting our garden each Christmas or ducks swimming in the local pond. But we have little idea of how much we value their presence and how they're contributing to our overall well-being."

Given the declining numbers of many bird species the study -- which also involves the University of East Anglia, the RSPB and the University of Chicago -- is timely. "Any well-being benefit we may be receiving could soon be in jeopardy as numbers of many wild bird species have declined across the UK since the 1970s," says Clark.

"We know that wild birds are very important to a significant proportion of people living in the UK, with more than 60% of people with a garden providing supplementary food to birds. What we need to understand next is how and to what degree wild birds are benefiting people in the UK, so that we can work to conserve these birds and the well-being benefits they provide for future generations. This is particularly important at a time when many of us are feeling the 'economic pinch' and will appreciate benefits from increased well-being to an even greater degree."

Participants from across the UK have been filling in questionnaires designed to find out how often they visit green spaces and why, and to measure how differing levels of bird activity near people's homes may be affecting their well-being.

According to Clark: "We're really interested in the reasons why people visit green spaces and how important different aspects of wildlife, particularly birds, are to their outdoor experiences. That friendly robin hopping across your lawn might be more important than you could imagine."

Results from the study are expected in the spring, and the three and a half year project is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, with additional support from the RSPB.

Natalie Clark will outline the study on Tuesday 18 December 2012 to the British Ecological Society's Annual Meeting at the University of Birmingham.

Deadly Dreams: What Motivates School Shootings?

After a recent spate of school shootings, researchers are analyzing the malignant fantasies of young assassins for warning signs that could help prevent future tragedies

Editor's note (12/17/2012): We are making this article from the August 2007 issue of Scientific American MIND free to all because of its relevance to Friday's deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Some of the statistics are outdated, but the themes and conclusions remain valid.

On August 30, 2006, a 19-year-old youth, clad in a trench coat, drove into the parking lot of his former high school in Hillsborough, N.C.?and began firing. Eight random shots wounded two students. When the police arrived, Alvaro Castillo gave up without a struggle. It was Castillo?s second exploit involving firearms that day. Earlier Castillo had murdered his father in the family home.

Three months later in the small town of Emsdetten, Germany, 18-year-old Sebastian Bosse posted a video message on the Internet: ?I can?t f?kin? wait until I can shoot every mother-f?kin? last one of you.? He then drove to his former school, armed with out-of-date rifles and homemade pipe bombs. Marching through the building, he shot randomly at students and teachers, injuring 37 people before ending his own life.

And the deadliest school rampage so far occurred on April 16, when a 23-year-old college student named Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded 25 others on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. After police arrived, Cho put a gun to his temple and pulled the trigger.

The overall number of homicides committed at U.S. schools has declined since the 1990s?a trend that jibes with the declining rate of homicides carried out by juveniles across the globe. Yet some of these killings now display a new quality: they are premeditated and choreographed, down to the weapons used and the clothes worn. My colleagues and I have detected a sharp jump over the past decade in the number of such school shootings worldwide?excluding gang-related incidents?that were intended to kill at least two people or a school official. In the U.S., the rate of such extreme killings has declined only slightly in the past four years from an uptick in the late 1990s. Incidentally, the vast majority of the perpetrators are male; by our count, females instigated only four of the 101 school shoot?ings that have occurred worldwide since 1974.

The chances of dying at school remain exceedingly small, but the most recent spate of school shootings has cast a dark shadow over a place intended to be a safe, enriching environment for children. This terrifying trend has brought a new urgency to efforts to unravel the roots of such deviance and to help educators, parents and psychologists recognize signs of trouble before a problem escalates.

About two years ago my colleagues and I co-founded the Institute for Violence Prevention and Applied Criminology in Berlin in part to design guidelines for preventing violence in schools. Since then, our work with violent adolescents and adults has helped us understand some of the motivations of young shooters and identify ?several warning signals that can help predict school rampages.

Many of our insights have come from analyzing the violent fantasies of adolescent shooters. These imaginings take root in a desperate mind that yearns for recognition. Often these young assassins are inspired by examples set by previous shooters. The fantasies typically intensify over a number of years before they are acted on. With time, the mental images become more ?detailed, and they often become buttressed by a distorted sense of what is just or moral, such as the need to avenge a perceived offense or the belief in a divine right to decide the fate of others.

Early on, troubled teenagers typically keep these fantasies secret, but they increasingly begin to leak their thoughts and plans to friends, chat rooms and even media outlets. Recognizing the signs of such deadly thoughts, as opposed to harmless daydreaming, can enable parents, teachers, social workers and other trusted adults to head off trouble before it begins. We have recently developed strategies for identifying youths at risk, for helping to prevent them from descending into a destructive fantasy world and for reacting expediently in the event of an imminent or actual shooting [see box on page 57].

Seeds of Violence
Fantasies and dreams often stimulate productive human activity. They also drive the healthy psychological development of children and adolescents, making possible prospective, or ?wishful,? thinking and creativity. So it is normal for an adolescent boy to escape into reveries about lovemaking with his girlfriend during an acutely boring class in school.

CSN: Bears' offense fails with division at stake

December 16, 2012, 5:44 pm

Once again the Bears offense that spoke of itself all offseason and preseason as ?explosive? is every bit of that -- except in the way that a firecracker is particularly explosive and destructive when it blows up in your own hand.
?
In another game in which the Bears scored exactly one touchdown, losing 21-13 to the Green Bay Packers, the offense has no one to blame but itself. The Bears netted 190 total yards, converted none of nine third-downs and did to itself whatever the Packers couldn?t.
?
Center Roberto Garza killed a third-and-1 with a flinch on a snap that effectively ended a superb drive at the Green Bay 30 on the first drive. One possession later the offense netted nothing on a drive starting at the Chicago 48.
?
The offense even occasionally handed the Packers the dagger. The turning point was also an offensive disaster with Devin Hester and Jay Cutler combining for an interception on either a wrong route or wrong throw on a first-down play from the Chicago 37 in the second quarter. Cutler responded by throwing an apparent fit on the sidelines to take care of any remaining composure
?
The poor plays came from everywhere. Alshon Jeffery was flagged for a push-off on an apparent touchdown on a fourth-and-one. It was fourth-and-one because Matt Forte and the offensive line couldn?t get the ball into the end zone from a start of first-and-goal from the Green Bay 5.
?
No position group was exempt from the follies.
?
QUARTERBACK?? ?D

The onus for the second-quarter interception that was a game-changer will be on Devin Hester but Jay Cutler may have made the mistake in throwing the ball to Green Bay rookie defensive back Casey Heyward. Exact responsibility is difficult to assign but the ball came out of Cutler?s hand, as he himself said, and not every poor pass play is on the receivers.
?
Cutler finished with 12-of-21 passing for 135 yards, a TD (to Brandon Marshall) and the interception, for a passer rating of 72.5, actually a little better than his career mark (60.5) against the Packers. But he again contributed to sacks (four) by holding the ball too long into plays and failing to get throws to receivers on time.
?
RUNNING BACKS?? ?D

Matt Forte?s failure to get into the end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter was anemic. He carried three times, the last two for no gain. Forte finished with 20 carries but for a mediocre 69 yards, 3.5 per carry, and that average was 2.5 without one 22-yard run.
?
Michael Bush was a curious no-show. He was limited in practice with lingering pain from a rib injury but if a player dresses, it is assumed he is ready to play. Or maybe the Bears just already had a full complement of inactives due to injuries.
?
Forte gave something to the passing game with five catches and a team-high 64 yards. But lack of consistent impact and not getting into the end zone on three tries from the five-yard line in is not ?elite.?
?
RECEIVERS?? ?F?? ?

Devin Hester appeared to foul up a route in the second quarter, leading to an interception that turned the game. It was a two-man route and in any case, quarterback and receiver were not on the same page, to use the words of one of them.
?
Brandon Marshall caught six of the seven passes thrown to him in one of the few games where he was not the No.1 Jay Cutler target (Forte was). He accounted for the Bears? one touchdown on a 15-yard catch behind good blocking by Hester to take out two defensive backs.
?
But the story of the game became Alshon Jeffery, who caught none of the four passes thrown (not always accurately) to him. Jeffery was called three times for pass interference after he himself committed a face-mask grab on cornerback Sam Shield with Shields inexplicably drawing the penalty.
?
One of Jeffery?s infractions cost the Bears a touchdown. The last cost them a 36-yard completion to the Green Bay 20 late in the fourth quarter on what was a potential drive for a tying score. Jeffery said afterwards that he needed to see the film of the game to assess what was happening, which says that he needs to work on in-game analysis quite a bit if he wants to solve problems at the time when they matter most.
?
OFFENSIVE LINE?? ?F

The inability to punch in for a score in the third quarter was not all on Matt Forte by any means. The offensive line started the game strong with a solid opening drive running the ball but was thwarted by Green Bay adjustments almost immediately.
?
James Brown remained as the starter at left guard over Chris Spencer and handled himself well in the first quarter before being beaten on a stunt for a sack in the second. Spencer then replaced Gabe Carimi after Carimi committed a holding penalty to nullify a Matt Forte run late in the first quarter.
?
Roberto Garza?s ?flinch? on a third-and-one was a major setback in a game where the Bears could not afford many. Or any.
?
Brown was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Edwin Williams for making too many mistakes. Carimi?s mistakes got him benched although he said afterwards that the plan was to rotate with Spencer; that appeared to be news to Spencer.
?
Green Bay had four sacks, of which some were Cutler?s fault for failing to get the ball off. But at least two were directly on the protection. Where the Bears turn now for a starting five is an unsolved question.
?
COACHING?? ?F

The plan to attack Green Bay with the run worked early as the Bears controlled the line of scrimmage. The Bears had opportunities and simply did not execute on those.
?
But the rash of game-changing penalties is laid at the feet of the coaching staff. Those were occurring in every area, from Cutler taking delay penalties or time outs because plays were slow coming in; Jeffery was pushing off over and over; or the line was committing penalties and mistakes that had coaches scrambling for answers.
