'UMSkinCheck' for iPhone and iPad Allows Users to Conduct Skin ...

Think you may have some questionable moles or patches of skin, yet still not making an appointment to the dermatologist to have them checked for cancer? Now, testing what you think could be skin cancer at home has gotten a tech twist that goes beyond just trying to match what the latest health magazine says about color, size and irregular borders.

The University of Michigan has developed an app ? UMSkinCheck ?that allows you to track suspicious moles using your smartphone camera. It walks users through the self exam of the image and also sends reminders to make frequent checks of areas to see if things have changed.

The app guides users through taking 23 pictures to evaluate their whole body.

?Whole body photography is a well-established resource for following patients at risk for melanoma. However, it requires a professional photographer, is not always covered by insurance, and can be an inconvenience. Now that many people have digital cameras on their phones, it?s more feasible to do this at home,??Michael Sabel, associate professor of surgery at the?U-M Medical School, who led development of the app, said according to the university?s website.

As the website explains, by taking baseline photos of the moles, if it??appears to be changing or growing, the photos can then be shared with a dermatologist to help determine whether a biopsy is necessary.? The app also includes a risk calculator that when input with some of your own personal information evaluates your own risk for developing skin cancer.

With more than 2 million Americans being diagnosed with skin cancer every year ? 50,000 of which have the more serious form called melanoma ? the university believes this app could lead to earlier detection and thus the appropriate treatment.

Currently, the app is available for iPhones and iPads.

Judge Forces Apple To Admit That Samsung Didn?t Copy The iPad

Judge Forces Apple To Admit That Samsung Didn?t Copy The iPad

Apple has been ordered to give Samsung its due credit across the pond.

Apple and Samsung have been duking it out in court rooms around the world for many months, and a ruling today brings an interesting twist to the never-ending saga.

A U.K. judge has ordered Apple to admit on its website and in British newspapers that Samsung has not copied the design of the iPad. Previously, the U.K. court had ruled that Samsung?s?Galaxy Tabs didn?t ripoff the iPad because ?they are not as cool.? What today?s ruling essentially means is that Apple will have to advertise for Samsung?s Galaxy series on the web and in British newspapers.

Bloomberg reports:

The notice should outline the July 9 London court decision that Samsung?s Galaxy tablets don?t infringe Apple?s registered designs, Judge Colin Birss said. It should be posted on Apple?s U.K. website for six months and published in several newspapers and magazines to correct the damaging impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple?s product, Birss said.

The order means Apple will have to publish ?an advertisement? for Samsung, and is prejudicial to the company, Richard Hacon, a lawyer representing Cupertino, California-based Apple, told the court. ?No company likes to refer to a rival on its website.?

Both Apple and Samsung have repeatedly accused each other of ripping off product and software designs. The whole string of disputes is based off fundamental questions about the legitimacy of prior art, generic design standards, and the minefield known as software patents.

It will be interesting to see how Apple spins this required PR for Samsung. The picture of Apple doing any sort of advertising at all for another company?especially one like Samsung?is very hard to imagine.

Apple is not only battling Samsung in court over patent infringement, but other tech companies like HTC and Google.

Pets Are People, Too! :: Estate Planning Matters

If one were to believe for a second that pets are not important, they might consider the impact owners? love for their furry friends have on the US economy: Over $35 BILLION spent on grooming, healthcare, shelter, food, etc. To put it in perspective: According to the US Census Bureau, consider these statistics:

Average 2011 Monthly Spending per Person for Civilian Population over the age of 16

  • Children?s Clothing: $5
  • Day care/nursery schools: $4
  • School Lunches: $3
  • Pets: $9

?

Okay, so not everyone has children, you say? Let?s look at these statistics:

?

  • Wine: $9
  • Pets: $9
  • Fuel Oil: $8
  • Tires: $8
  • Movie Theaters: $4
  • Laundry/Dry Cleaning: $3

There is no doubt that we love our animals! Pet owners, in my firm opinion, fall into only one lifetime (as a general rule) category:

As much as we love our pets, there is a larger statistic that shows pets are the most neglected consideration in the majority of pet owners? estate planning. Most states may consider pets as property and not heirs with a claim against the estate in the absence of being designated by the deceased as an heir. But the fact is that pets don?t cease to exist if the owners pass away or become incapacitated. They still need to be fed and have care for their well being and health.

There is a story about a plain, black cat?s wealthy owner who left the maid a trust to provide for the total care of the cat. After several years, the trust executors became suspicious as it would be a world?s record if the cat WAS still living but yet the maid was still remitting the documents for the care o the cat. An investigation revealed that the maid had taken care of the cat till it died, procured another black cat until it died and was now on her third black cat and still financially benefiting from being the trustee for the cat?s care.

So? what do you do if you want to provide for your beloved pet to make sure that it is not abused, neglected, or otherwise left in undesirable circumstances? It?s no longer only the ultra wealthy who leave provisions for the care of their pets in the event of their death or incapacitation, and actually, it?s becoming more and more common.

As a pet owner, you really should consider these questions in your estate planning and also how to fund your plans and to make sure they are used properly. (The black cat?s owner could have taken a few more steps to ensure the trust for his pet wouldn?t have been squandered through theft by conversion!)

Call my office and join my growing list of pet owners who want to ensure legally that their pets will be cared for after their death or incapacitation. We?ll consider these options:

  • Make no specific plans, but leave it up to your executor, family, or friends to find a new home after your death.
  • Leave your pet (in a will or a trust) to a specific caregiver you really trust. The caregiver is then responsible for the animal?s care.
  • Along with the pet, leave the caregiver a sum of money for their trouble and to offset expenses.
  • Create a trust to benefit the caregiver, with instructions to provide funds for the pet?s care.
  • Create a trust for the pet, along with instructions for overseeing the pet?s care, by naming a trustee and possibly an ?Animal Care Panel.

Consider the options and how the results of each will impact your pet.

What have you done to make sure your pets will be cared for after you?re gone?

Call me, and I?ll discuss with you what you SHOULD do!

Episcopal bishops OK trial gay blessing prayer; full church affirms transgender ordination

Episcopal bishops approved an official prayer service for blessing same-sex couples Monday at a national convention that also cleared the way for transgender ordination.

At the Episcopal General Convention in Indianapolis, the House of Bishops voted 111-41, with three abstentions, to authorize a provisional rite for same-sex unions for the next three years. The liturgy next goes to convention's deputies for their authorization.

In a separate vote Monday, the full convention approved new anti-discrimination language for transgendered clergy candidates and church members. Some dioceses already ordain transgendered people or elect them to positions of parish leadership. However, advocates for the amendment argued they needed an explicit statement of acceptance as the churchwide policy.

The Rev. Carla Robinson, who is transgendered and a vicar of All Saints Church in Seattle, said she was lucky to have the backing of parishes and bishops when she was considering ordination, but she said others haven't had the same support.

"I stand here as a priest today because my diocese specifically said that my gender identity and expression didn't disqualify me from the discernment process," Robinson said from the floor of the convention. "I ask that as a church we do the same for my trans sisters and brothers."

While critics of the different measures registered their opposition during the convention debate, many conceded ahead of the vote that they were in the minority.

Episcopalians blazed a trail ? and caused an uproar ? in 2003 by consecrating New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican world. The Episcopal Church is the U.S. body of the Anglican Communion. Episcopal conservatives responded by creating a rival denomination under the guidance of like-minded Anglican leaders overseas.

Worldwide, the 77 million-member Anglican Communion, which has its roots in the Church of England, has been splintering ever since. Anglican leaders had asked Episcopalians for a moratorium on electing gay or lesbian bishops as the communion struggled to stay together. However, after a few years, Episcopalians voted to lift the temporary ban.

On Monday, several Episcopal bishops who spoke against the same-sex unions trial liturgy warned about the repercussions overseas.

"I believe it will put us, put the Episcopal Church, out of the Christian mainstream," said Bishop Edward Little of the Diocese of Northern Indiana. "They will interpret that the Episcopal Church has endorsed same-sex marriage."

However, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde argued that an official service was needed to honor and bless the "lifelong same-sex couples" who she said "have served Christ and Christ's mission in ways incalculable to measure."

The official liturgy for same-sex blessings has been in development since 2009, when it was authorized by the last General Convention. Some bishops had already developed rites for the ceremonies for use in their own dioceses. If the deputies approve the proposal before them in Indianapolis, it will be the first such official prayer for use by the entire church.

The rite is called "The Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant." It includes what one bishop described as a conscience clause, explicitly stating that no one in the church would be forced to perform the ceremony or punished in any way for barring its use.

Like other mainline Protestant groups, Episcopalians have been debating the Bible and homosexuality for decades. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), have in recent years struck down barriers for clergy living with same-sex partners, while the United Methodist Church has maintained its ban on ordination for openly gay and lesbian candidates.

The New York-based Episcopal Church has 1.96 million members. The convention in Indianapolis runs through Thursday.
