You Can Buy Your Very Own Used Morgue Fridge on Ebay Right Now
Need a new fridge? Has the State of New York Office of General Services ever got a great deal for you! How about a used but fully functional morgue cooler from the Manhattan Psychiatric Center? It's on Ebay right now, and only a few hundred bucks.
Perfect for the storage of cadaver-sized ice cream cakes, corpse-shaped ice sculptures, or dead body-ish dead bodies, the fridge is a hefty 6 feet wide, 8 feet deep, and 6 feet high. Of course, the unit has sustained some wear and tear (read: has almost certainly contained a wide variety of DEAD PEOPLE), but it works.
The Ebay posting's stock discriptor for "used" serves to describe the fridge in a sort of unintentionally sinister deadpan:
Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used.
It should come as no surprise that shipping isn't included. The lucky winner of the fridge will have to disassemble it on his or her own before transporting it back to a cozy death-cave hideout. But it's a pretty good deal. At the time of this writing it only costs $375, which seems cheap but I'll admit I've very little experience in buying and selling cold corpse storage.
The auction's going until June 6th, but the price is climbing (it went up $20 during the writing of this post) so get in there now! Or don't, and be a normal human being who's frankly kind of skeeved out at the prospect of being near this thing, much less owning it! Your call. [Ebay via BetaBeat, The New York Post]

AG investigating Vaden Law Firm for foreclosure fees | Inside Real ...

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers is investigating the Denver-based Vaden Law Firm for possibly ?engaging in deceptive conduct,? by possibly committing fraud against distressed homeowners by overcharging for foreclosure services it provides.
Suthers filed a 12-page motion in Denver District Court in late April, seeking to force Vaden to comply with a subpoena it issued last December for more information on its investigation.

At issue is whether the firm is ripping off distressed homeowners and investors buying foreclosures or is Suthers invoking ?certain magic words,? in what are typical attorney-client relationships.
Suthers said Vaden might have violated the Colorado Consumer Protection Act by ?making false or misleading statements about the cost of its services or otherwise engaging in deceptive conduct prohibited by the CCPA.?
For example, Vaden charges $150 for posting a notice of a Rule 120 hearing on the door of a homeowner in foreclosure ?by hiring a family member or independent contractors,? while the going market rate of the postings is about $25, according to Suther?s court filing. A Rule 120 hearing is when a judge review and approves a public auction of a foreclosed home.
In many cases, Vaden?s clients are mortgage servicers, but Suthers argued the ?foreclosure billing practice is unique,? in that its fees in many cases are ultimately paid by ?homeowners, prospective purchasers, investors and taxpayers.?
Many mortgage servicers are reimbursed when the foreclosed homes mortgages were backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so in many cases costs charged by Vaden are ?borne by taxpayers through government-backed mortgages,? according to the motion.
The Attorney General ?has a public interest to ensure that the fees and costs are not misleading or deceptive,? according to the civil action.
The subpoena seeks information about the amount of compensation to the firm?s family members and independent contractors who post the notices.
Postings that were intended to help homeowners were turned into a ?profit mechanism for the firm at the expense of homeowners, investors, prospective purchasers, and taxpayers,? according to the filings
Other examples of Vaden charging too much, according to Suthers:
- Vaden charges $300 for a court and Lexis/Nexis filing for a Rule 120 action, which typically costs $200 or less.
- It charges a $60 technology fee, while it is billed $40.
- A mailing cost of $25, regardless of the actual cost or number of mailings.
- A $30 ?document fee, regardless of whether such a cost is necessary or actually incurred.
However, in an 18-page response filed on May 22, Vaden?s attorney, D. Rico Munn, said the Attorney General?s office has overstepped its authority and does not have the right to subpoena the records it is seeking.
?The Attorney General appears to believe it has nearly limitless power to invade the confidences that serve the foundation of any attorney-client relationship by merely invoking certain magic words or inflammatory allegations,? according to the response by Munn, an attorney with Baker & Hostetler. (Munn this summer will be leaving the law firm to become the superintendent of the Aurora Public Schools.)

Munn, in his response, said the Attorney General is incorrect that the foreclosure billing process is unique because the costs are ultimately borne by third parties. That occurs in many contexts, such as insurance tripartite relationships, corporate indemnity agreements, fee and cost shifting agreements in contracts, ?and even where the Attorney General represents members of government,? Munn argued.
?Without any legal basis, the Attorney General argues that an attorney can incur liability under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act for statements made of a client in a contested proceeding?Ultimately, the Attorney General has failed to state a claim under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act and thus, the subpoena is nothing more than a naked attempt to invade the core of an attorney-client relationship.? Munn called Suther?s described the subpoena request as a ?staggering overreach of authority.?
Vaden, he said, like any other law firm, negotiates with its clients regarding compensation for fees and costs. ?The amount the attorney charges is strictly a matter of contract between it and its clients.?
Munn noted the firm does not have any interest in the foreclosed properties and is paid by the clients. It is immaterial, he argue, whether the lender uses proceeds from a foreclosure sale or redemption to pay the Vaden Law Firm.

Why sharks generate more money alive than dead

Shark ecotourism currently generates more than $314 million annually, according to researchers from the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Sharks that are free to swim around in their natural habitats are a valuable part of tourism around the world, a new study finds, which suggests sharks are worth more in the world's oceans than they are on restaurant menus.
The new research provides evidence of the value of conservation against the rampant killing of sharks for food, said study lead author Andr?s Cisneros-Montemayor, a Ph.D. candidate in the fisheries economics research unit at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada.
A team of scientists pored through data from 70 sites in 45 countries to compare how much money is generated each year by fisheries that fuel the global shark fin trade, and how much is generated by ecotourism, which encompasses all forms of shark-watching activities.
Currently, shark ecotourism brings in $314 million annually worldwide, and this sector is expected to continue growing. Surges in shark tourism are particularly evident in the Caribbean and Australia, the researchers said.
"That figure is projected to double to over $700 million per year within the next 20 years," Cisneros-Montemayor told LiveScience.
In comparison, the landed market value (which refers to the market value of goods on the day they are offloaded from a vessel) of shark fisheries around the globe is $630 million per year, but has been in decline over the past 10 to 15 years, the researchers said. Approximately 38 million sharks are killed each year to meet the demands of the controversial shark fin industry, which uses the fins to make shark fin soup, a dish that is considered a delicacy in some Asian countries. Sharks are often thrown back into the ocean to die after their fins have been removed.
But, there are other important reasons to promote shark conservation beyond economics, Cisneros-Montemayor said. For one, sharks play a vital role in the ecosystem of the oceans.
"Studies have found that if you remove top predators, like sharks, you change the structure of the ecosystem itself," he explained. "This significantly changes the ecosystem, and it puts you in danger of all kinds of bad things happening."
For one, sharks keep the ocean's complex food webs in balance by feeding on aging or slower populations of fish. This keeps fish species lower down on the food chain from becoming too populous, or from overfeeding on their respective prey. Without sharks, this delicate system could collapse, Cisneros-Montemayor explained.Shark conservation efforts are also imperative in order to ensure the health of the species, the researchers said.
"Sharks are slow to mature and produce few offspring," study co-author Rashid Sumaila, director of UBC's Fisheries Center, said in a statement. "The protection of live sharks, especially through dedicated protected areas, can benefit a much wider economic spectrum while helping the species recover."
The results of the study were published Thursday (May 30) in Oryx ? The International Journal of Conservation.

Exercising Old-School - Health, Fitness, and Sports - Wrong Planet
About two weeks ago, I went for an annual physical. I had ballooned in the last year. For six years, I had held steady at just under 300lb, but when I went in I weighed in at 360lb. Needless to say, this was a bit of a shock. Yet, in the last two weeks, I dropped 20lb. I'm rather proud of myself. It's the first time I've actively lost weight in over half a decade.
I approached this in a two-pronged attack. The first was through food. Rather than stuffing my face with whatever could be microwaved quickly, I cooked. And I cooked so that I would have few leftovers. I've learned I'm pretty good at cooking, and have noticed that if eaten slowly, and without the temptation of a second serving, I can be just as satisfied with a small bowl of goulash as I might with a big one or three.
The second was through exercise, and that's the point of this thread. Now, my sister, she's a gym rat, and her boyfriend is a powerlifter, and both of them have been trying to drag me to the gym. The problem is, I don't like gyms. If I exercise, I prefer it to be out of doors. There's something about gyms that has always put me off, I just don't know what it is.
So what I did instead, keeping with my special interest du jour, the 19th Century British Empire, was to devour everything I could find on the exercises of that time. In case you didn't know, physical fitness was almost a religion in those days (It wouldn't do to send flabby little nerds off to subjugate deepest Africa). Rudyard Kipling, for example, one of my great heroes, was a four and a half minute mile, supposedly. So, says I, what can I learn here?
When my sister goes to the gym, she'll spend two hours of exercise there, and the rest of the day, she sits. This didn't seem pretty productive to me, and a lot of the sources that I've studied actually proposed instead to do a little bit a lot; A set of 60 jumping jacks or 25 squats every hour, for example. It seemed stamina training and walking had a greater emphasis than anything else, but strength training was definitely supported. A young man was recommended to do curls or pushups getting out of bed, and to run a mile every evening before bed. In between, there were exercises scattered throughout the day.
Now, this philosophy of physical fitness all the time seems far more positive to me than "a half hour of continuous exercise three times a week" as my doctor suggested. This is the kind of training that puts us at peak physical fitness, and it was spread throughout the western world, not just in Britain. What happened? Why have the expectations placed on a man (or woman) been reduced so drastically, and despite the obesity epidemic, nobody seems to be proposing a return to such a regimen?
Ah, well, it works for me.

LONDON (AP) ? The second of two suspects in the vicious slaying of a British soldier was discharged from a hospital Friday and taken to a London police station, police said.
The Metropolitan Police said the 28-year-old man would be interviewed by counterterrorism detectives on suspicion of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer.
The suspect, Michael Adebolajo, was hospitalized after being shot by police during the May 22 attack.
Adebolajo is one of two main suspects in the killing of Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, who was hacked to death in a south London street as he returned to his barracks.
The other suspect, 22-year-old Michael Adebowale, has been charged with murder.
Adebolajo was seen on video taken at the site saying the attack was revenge for Western governments' actions in Muslim lands.
Queen Elizabeth II met with colleagues of the slain soldier Friday on a visit to Woolwich barracks, where he was based.
Also Friday, police investigating the slaying arrested two men, a 42-year-old and a 46-year-old, on suspicion of involvement in supplying illegal firearms.
And a man arrested after giving an interview about his friendship with one of the suspects was charged with three terror offenses.
Ibrahim Abdullah-Hassan ? who also goes by the name Abu Nusaybah ? was arrested last week following a BBC interview in which he said British security services had tried to recruit Adebolajo.
Police have said that the 30-year-old Nusaybah's arrest wasn't directly tied to Rigby's killing.
On Friday, Scotland Yard said he has been charged with three offenses ? which relate to filmed recordings of lectures and written text ? that allegedly encouraged acts of terrorism.
